The Houston tunnels began in the 1930s to connect private buildings with employee parking garages. The 1960s saw the opening of the tunnels to the general public. The city became involved in the late 1970s and 1980s when it excavated under streets and sidewalks to create linkages amongst the tunnels. Led by an experienced tour guide, we begin at City Hall and continue in and under Houston buildings with a focus on art, architecture, architects, and history. We will travel through multiple tunnels and flood gates, stopping for a buy-your-own lunch at the tunnel food court. This tour will include a little over 2 miles of leisurely walking.
